Painting Tips
Preparation

Preparation is a key element of custom painting. Attention to detail during this phase of your project will enhance the beauty of your environment and provide you with a long lasting finish to enjoy for many years to come.

Exterior

Most surfaces should be pressure cleaned, caulked and patched. For masonry surfaces, especially chalky ones, a good quality masonry sealer is recommended. This will allow for stronger bond between the new finish coat and the existing surface.

Interior

  • Walls should be lightly sanded with a pole sander to remove loose particles.
  • Caulk and patch all unnecessary holes, cracks and open seams in walls, doors, trim, baseboards and molding.
  • All doors, trim, baseboards and moldings should be lightly sanded and wiped clean, especially when oil based paints are applied.
  • Apply a good quality primer/sealer to all water stained and severely tarnished areas.
Interior Extra

  • Remove and clean (or replace) all switch plates, air vents, and door knobs. Old aluminum air vents and electrical receptacles can be painted if they are properly cleaned and primed.
  • Old Formica cabinets and wood paneling can also be painted if properly cleaned and prepared. Consult a professional for the right procedure and required materials.
Selecting The Right Paint

Selecting the right paint is very important. The best way to accomplish this is by speaking to a professional.

There are many types of specialty paints for different types of surfaces and exposure conditions. Consult a professional to determine the proper materials.

Oil based paints can be applied over latex paints fairly easly, however, it is not recommended to use latex paint over oil, unless the surface is properly prepared. Consult a professional for advice.

Most major paint suppliers will offer different grades and prices ranges to choose from. Premium grade paints are worth the additional investment. They cover better, smell better and provide a longer lasting, more durable finish.

Specialty paint suppliers ( i.e. Benjamin Moore & Co., Porter, Sherwin-Williams, ect.) are recommended, especially when seeking professional advice.  Their employees are generally more knowledgeable and courteous in helping you choose the right materials.

Choosing Colors And Finishes

Colors and Finish selection are personal choices. They should reflect the character of those who live and work in an environment and atmosphere they want to create.

Faux Finishes are one of Tom's unique skills, enabling him to create depth, dimension, texture and character to ceilings, walls, woodwork and furniture, therefore enhancing the architectural environment of your residential or commercial project.

Specific Application

For questions regarding a specific application, consult a professional.

                                            Interior

Kitchen & Bath

These paints should be highly resistant to moisture and easy to clean. Many older homes have oil base paints on the walls and ceilings. Consult a professional for advice on surface preparation prior to painting.

Walls and Ceilings

Premium latex paints are your best choice They are available in several different levels of sheen ( i.e. flat, satin, eggshell, semi-gloss and high gloss). The higher level of sheen, the more reflective and washable your surface will be. Businesses with high amount of traffic and frequent cleaning requirements should consider a more washable paint.

Woodwork (Doors, Trim and Molding)

Although there are many good latex enamels today, oil base paints are still your best selection for beauty and durability.

Furniture

Preparation is the KEY. There are many specialty finishes which can be achieved using the finest paints, stains, glazes, lacquers and conversion varnishes. For best results, ask advice and read up prior to beginning your project.

                                                        Exterior

Masonry & Stucco

Premium flat or soft gloss acrylic latex paints are recommended.

Fascia, Trim, Gutters and Woodwork

Premium soft gloss house and trim paints are designed for these applications and are recommended.

Wood Siding

Premium stains and acrylic latex paints are your best choice.

Doors

Oil based paints for metal doors. Oil or wood stain for wood. There are few good exterior acrylic paints which could be used if the surface is properly prepared. Again preparation is a key element.
